Film screening to encourage engineers to reach for the stars

Students are invited to a free screening of a Hollywood blockbuster to help inspire them to become engineers.

As part of its involvement in the Year of Engineering, the Rochester Bridge Trust will be hosting a showing of The Martian, starring Matt Damon.

Following the survival efforts of an astronaut stranded on Mars, the film highlights a range of scientific and engineering challenges Matt Damon’s character has to overcome to stay alive. The film, and the book it was based on, have both been praised for their attention to scientific detail and accuracy, and for highlighting the importance of engineering knowledge.

Aileen White, Education Officer at the Rochester Bridge Trust, said: “Films are a great way of capturing the imaginations of young people, and for a successful blockbuster to demonstrate the practical applications of engineering is brilliant.

“The Martian is particularly inspiring because it shows young people that engineering really can help you to reach for the stars.”

The film screening is open to all young people with an interest in science and engineering, including families, school and community groups, students, teachers and lecturers. Please note The Martian is a 12A. The screening will be held in the Pembroke Building at the University of Greenwich, on Thursday, 15th March. Doors open at 4pm for a 4.30pm start.

Tickets are free but must be booked, email aileen.white@rbt.org.uk to find out how to register.
