Bridge Engineering

Sydney Harbour Bridge

Put simply, bridge engineers help vehicles and pedestrians cross rivers, valleys, roads and other obstacles. They are civil engineers who specialise in bridge design and construction. Some design new bridges, while others inspect and plan the improvement and repair of older ones.

A bridge engineer considers where bridges are needed and what type of bridge will best meet the needs of each location. Designs are prepared and calculations made to ensure that the structure will be able to stand up to the loads it will bear. The loads on a bridge will come from its own weight and the traffic it will carry but also from the pressures of water and wind in its environment.
