Highway Engineering

Highway engineers are civil engineers involved with the planning, design, construction and operation of roads.   Highway engineers take into account how much traffic there will be in future years to decide how big roads and junctions need to be. They design roads so that they will be safe, minimise the effect of traffic on the environment and will last for as long as possible.  They also look after and repair (or “maintain”) roads to make sure the surface of roads and footways stay safe.

As well as looking after the roads themselves, highway engineers arrange for road signs, street lighting and traffic lights to be put in place.
